Buoyed by increased consumption and price-drop, the personal computer sales touched 30 lakh units (3 million) in 2003-04, registering a growth of 32 per cent over the previous fiscal.

With sound macroeconomic conditions and positive buying sentiment, PC sales are expected to cross 38 lakh (3.8 million) units this fiscal, the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology said while announcing the yearly review.

The domestic computer hardware market, including PCs, grew 25 per cent to $5 billion [Rs 23,000 crore (Rs 230 billion)] in 2003-04. The computer hardware exports grew marginally to $1.25 billion from $1.1 billion in 2002-03.

One key feature of the survey was that the market share of Indian brands during the year declined to 21 per cent from 26 per cent earlier, despite a seven per cent increase in sales.

The MNC brands also lost two per cent market share while the sales grew 23 per cent. The major gainer was the assembled PC segment whose share grew to 53 per cent in 2003-04 from 46 per cent in the previous year. Sales of the assembled PC segment grew 52 per cent.

Making their way into the home segment, 18 per cent of the total notebook computers sold in 2003-04 were bought by home users.

PC sales, during the year, were dominated by Intel P4, accounting for 73 per cent of the market share, followed by P3 with 11 per cent market share while alternative processors like AMD and Cyrix accounted for another 14 per cent.
