Personal computer sales in the country are likely to grow by 40 per cent during 2004-05 touching 4.2 million units, the Manufacturers Association of Information Technology said on Thursday.

"We are estimating a 40 per cent growth during the current fiscal, which will take the PC sales to 4.2 million units," Vinni Mehta, executive director of MAIT, told reporters in New Delhi.

"But we have to watch how the year goes. These are rough estimates," he added.

The industry estimated that PC sales in the last fiscal crossed the projected figure of 3 million units. The final figures for 2003-04 are yet to be out.

During the current year, Mehta said the growth in PC sales is likely to be driven by technological innovations. He said prices were expected to drop on account of the IT agreement under the World Trade Organisation which will come into effect in 2005.

MAIT is currently involved in negotiations with the ministry and other agencies for bringing out an exclusive consumer finance scheme for home PC users to boost sales.
