MTNL, BSNL sign pact for seamless mobile service

January 07, 2003 19:42 IST

State-owned telecom monoliths, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd on Tuesday signed a pact to ensure seamless roaming between their networks to help their cellular subscribers have smooth mobility and connectivity without roaming charges.

BSNL chairman and managing director Prithipal Singh told reporters in New Delhi that currently subscribers have to pay exceptionally high charges for roaming into the areas of other operators.

''CellOne had evolved a tariff structure in which charges for roaming has been reduced to zero.'' Singh said, adding that for distances up to 500 kms, CellOne has already been offering cell to cell calls under Plan 325 at a rate cheaper than the recently announced tariff by cellular operators.

In addition, there is no air time charge for STD calls on Plan 325, making the end-to-end calls cheaper compared to any other cellular operator, Singh said.
