National Thermal Power Corporation will hire 10,000 engineers in the next 10 years as part of massive expansion plans.

"We need to hire 1,000 engineers every year for the next 10 years to meet manpower requirements in view of our plans to expand generation capacity," NTPC director - human resources S P Singh told PTI.

At present, the power giant has about 25,000 employees, out of which half of the workforce are engineers.

The company also aims to improve its Man-to-MW ratio -- an indicator of the work force's efficiency -- to as much as 0.50, which would be the best achieved so far globally, by the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-17).

In the initial phase, the company plans to take its Man-to-MW ratio to 0.64 by the end of the 11th Plan (2007-12).

Currently the ratio is around 0.80. NTPC plans to scale up its power generation capacity to 50,000 MW by the end of the 11th Plan (2007-12) from its present production capability of over 33,000 MW.

At present, projects totalling 16,340 MW are under various stages of implementation.

Its ultimate plan is to attain a generation capacity of 75,000 MW by 2017, which would be the terminal year of the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17).
