States with relatively low-profile economies have seen the quickest growth in jobs between 1998 and 2005, according to the provisional results of the economic census 2005.
Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim, Kerala, Haryana and Tripura are states that have recorded the quickest growth in jobs between 1998 and 2005.
The Fourth Economic Census was carried out in 1998. Jammu & Kashmir, for instance, registered the fastest growth in employment in the country. Employment there grew by 6.82 per cent between 1998 and 2005, while all over India it grew by just 2.49 per cent.
The sharp growth in employment in Jammu & Kashmir could be partially explained by the significant growth in enterprises during the 1998-2005 period.
In the state, the number of enterprises during the period grew by 5.99 per cent to 3.23 lakh. Growth in enterprises across the country was 4.80 per cent during the same period.
The fast-paced absorption of people into the workforce in Jammu & Kashmir could also have something to do with the nature of enterprises. The average number of people employed in new enterprises may have been higher than in most other states.
In Tamil Nadu, though the number of enterprises in the 1998-2005 period grew by 8.49 per cent to 4.44 million, employment grew by just 4.62 per cent to 9.8 million.
