The government plans to create five crore employment opportunities during the Tenth Plan period, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.

The creation of three crore employment opportunities will be done through normal growth process and the remaining through special employment generation programmes.

Minister for Labour and Employment K Chandrasekhar Rao said the strategy for creation of five crore employment would be applicable for both rural and urban areas including both educated and uneducated wherein special emphasis would be laid on labour intensive sectors such as irrigation, agriculture, agro forestry, small and medium enterprises, tourism, information communication technology and other services.

He pointed out that the Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana especially catered to the needs of educated unemployed by assisting them in setting up any economically viable activity in rural and urban areas.

Under this scheme the target for additional employment opportunities in the Tenth Plan in 2004-05 are 16.50 lakh and 3.75 lakh respectively, he said.

The National Sample Survey Organisation has found that 88.6 per cent of the usual status agricultural labourers in rural areas could find more or less full time work, the Minister said and pointed out that a National Rural Employment Guarantee Bill to provide 100 days of employment to each family living below the poverty line has already been tabled in the Parliament.
