Apex industry chamber CII on Tuesday said it was opposed to any mandatory provision for reserving jobs for weaker sections in the private sector and termed the presence of Left parties, a major constituent of the UPA government at the Centre, a "major challenge" in the face of their objection to privatisation and FDI.

"We are not in agreement with reservation," CII's new president Y C Deveshwar said when asked how did the chamber view any kind of mandatory reservation.

However, he said that India Inc. was "in agreeme
nt with the objectives of reservation." He said there was a need to devise a "long-term productive strategy", by closer coordination between the private sector and the government, to facilitate job creation, which was imperative for the country's growth.

On the question of Left parties, who has made known its opposition to hiking FDI limits as well as privatisation, he said it was a "challenge that the government has got".

However, he said that the government had a common minimum programme as per which it had to run.
