The finance ministry on Thursday said the July 31 deadline for filing of Income Tax return for individuals had not been extended except for those in Maharashtra and Gujarat, where normal life was disrupted due to heavy rains.

Clearing the haze over the deadline, the ministry said: "There is no change in due dates for filing returns, which is July 31."

Income Tax authorities have made all arrangements for accepting the return of income tax on July 30 and 31, which are holidays being Saturday and Sunday.

"Any return filed on August 1 will also be deemed to have been filed within the due date," it said in a release.

However, considering the disruption caused by heavy rains in Maharashtra and Gujarat, the Central Board of Direct Taxes had extended the due date for filing of returns to August 31, 2005.
