Warning the Indian IT industry against complacency, the head of Satyam Computer Services has said it needs to continuously innovate to keep ahead of other developing nations including China which are 'eyeing a piece of the pie.'

"The Indian IT industry is a big success story but success sometimes brings complacency and if that happens, other nations could overtake it," Satyam Chairman B Ramalinga Raju said while addressing a meeting of Indian American professionals at the Indian Consulate in New York on Wednesday.

The Indian IT sector needs to continue to innovate to keep ahead of other developing nations including China which are "eyeing a piece of the pie," he said.

Observing that the IT industry has come a long way since the early 1990s, he said India has developed a pool of highly professional personnel and overcome skepticism of major corporations that contracting work to the country involved a risk factor.

"The time has come for India to think in terms of competing with giants among global players, like IBM. They must start thinking global," he said.

Replying to questions about rising cost of staff in India, he said the IT industry would have to move at least some operations from cities to villages.

He also stressed on the need to improve physical infrastructure on a priority basis which would be a major factor in the expansion of the IT industry.

During the meeting, Consul General Pramathesh Rath also spoke about the huge strides made by the Indian IT industry.
