Infosys to hire 12,600 in 2005-06

India's second largest software company Infosys Technologies will add 12,600 software engineers this fiscal, surpassing its record of over 11,000 additions in 2004-05, the company said on Thursday.

Infosys and its four subsidiaries added 11,116 people last year to take the total staff strength to 36,750.

"We have added a record number of employees during the year and our variable compensation plan helped align our employee costs to the growth in business," Kris Gopalakrishnan, chief operating officer, Infosys, said.

Infosys's business process outsourcing arm Progeon has 3,966 people.

The Nasdaq-listed Infosys plans to invest between Rs 950 crore (Rs 9.5 billion) to Rs 1100 crore (Rs 11 billion) this year and add 20,000 seats to ramp up its capacity. Its capital expenditure last year was Rs 831 crore (Rs 8.31 billion).

"We will invest Rs 250 crore (Rs 2.5 billion) in technology," Gopalakrishnan said.

The CEO of Infosys' Chinese arm, James Lin, said the unit at Shanghai currently employs about 150 people, including 30 Indian nationals.

"We will increase our strength to 1,000 at China by the year end," James said.

Infosys has hedged $353 million against currency fluctuations at Rs 43.62 per dollar, T V Mohandas Pai, chief financial officer, Infosys, said.
