Finance Minister P Chidambaram is likely to meet captains of Indian industry on June 17 so that 12 per cent growth can be achieved in the manufacturing sector.
"They (three apex chambers -- Confederation of Indian Industry, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) have sent their proposals eight or nine days ago. We had suggested dates to them. We have now proposed June 17 and the chambers will confirm," he told reporters.
Chidambaram had made an offer to industry head honchos soon after the budget that he was willing remove hurdles to achieve 12 per cent annual growth.
He gave them six weeks time to come out with proposals. After 15 days, he agreed to meet them in the first week of May.
The minister said the meeting was delayed as the response from the chambers came about a week ago.
He said the growth in manufacturing sector will sustain a high 8 to 10 per cent rate.
Apart from significant contribution from agriculture, which grew by 3.9 per cent in 2005-06 as against 2.3 per cent in the quick estimates announced earlier, Chidambaram said manufacturing grew by 9 per cent, construction sector by 12.1 per cent, trade, transport, hotels and communications by 11.5 per cent and financial services by 9.7 per cent.
