The GSM-based mobile industry has added 6.19 million users in January 2008, taking their total mobile subscriber base to 178.4 million. The GSM service providers had added 5.7 million new subscribers in the month of December last year.
Bharti Airtel continues to remain at the top slot with a market share of 32.18 per cent and a total user base of 57.41 million. The company added 2.25 million users in January against 2.2 million a month ago.
Vodafone-Essar captured a market share of 23.06 per cent and added 1.28 million new users. It had a total subscriber base of 41.14 million at the end of January. State-run telecom major BSNL added 10.36 lakh (1.03 million) users in January against 767,000 lakh users in December.
The company now has a market share of 18.92 per cent with a total subscriber base of 33.74 million users.
Aditya Birla-promoted Idea Cellular has a total subscriber base of 21.95 million, with net addition of over 900,000 users in the month of January.
Regional operator Aircel reported a base of 9.93 million, while Spice had 3.9 million subscribers. MTNL, which provides mobile services in Delhi and Mumbai, added 58,319 users in the same period and now has a total user base of 3.01 million.
