4.4 mn new GSM users in Sept

With a sharp spurt in growth, the GSM industry has witnessed the highest ever subscriber additions in September at 4.4 million, taking the cellular subscriber base to 91 million.

"The GSM subscriber base has touched 91 million in September this year as compared to 86.6 million in August," a Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI) statement said.

T V Ramachandran, director general, COAI, stated that this is strong evidence of the fact that GSM continues to be the predominant technology choice of the masses.

Among all circles, Category C witnessed the highest rate of growth at 6.4 per cent, followed by Category B circles at 5.6 per cent.

Within Category C circles, the Assam and North East circle recorded the highest growth at 8.8 per cent and 8.2 per cent respectively.

Within the category B circles, the highest growth was recorded in Madhya Pradesh and Haryana at 9.6 per cent and 8.9 per cent respectively.  Category A circles also witnessed a healthy growth of 5.25 per cent in September 06.

The Metro subscribers also grew by 3.35 per cent over the previous month. Kolkata recorded the highest growth at 4.7 per cent followed by Chennai at four per cent.
