Indian mobile gaming market will generate $26 million in revenue in 2004, and will increase to $336 million in annual revenue by 2009, according to a new report.

Entertainment on the move is a rapidly growing pastime and most popular application in India's digital consumer economy, according to a report by In-Stat/MDR.

The market currently represents 5 per cent of the world's mobile gaming market, but because the market is a favoured software service destination, In-Stat speculates that India will be a multimillion-dollar market for both software development and end-user consumption.

CDMA and GSM networks, on average, report 220,000 downloads each month, In-Stat said. With just about six major game developers in India, the mobile gaming market is in its infancy, the report said.

"The growth of this market sector has attracted publishers, developers, animators, musicians, and content providers, and is also stimulating the development of innovative business models," said Clint Wheelock, director of In-Stat/MDR's wireless research group.

"Mobile gaming is not just about fun; it also represents one key element of a rich mobile entertainment experience for consumers, and a lucrative market opportunity for industry players," he said.
