The worst drought in a century and its cascading effect has led to a sharp fall in India's foodgrain output by 30 million tonne to a seven-year low of 182.57 million tonne in 2002-03.

The government has revised downwards the country's grains output estimates by 1.5 million tonne from 184.07 million tonne.

The 13.8 per cent decline in output comes a year after the record production of 212.02 million tonne in 2001-02, according to the fourth advance estimates released in New Delhi on Thursday.

Production estimates for both rice and wheat have been cut to 75.72 million tonne and 69.32 million tonne from 76.91 and 70.26 million tonne, respectively.

Kharif estimates have been marginally increased to 90.48 million tonne from 89.45 million tonne, but for rabi they have been cut to 92.09 million tonne from the third estimates of 94.61 million tonne.

According to the official data, there has been a decline in production of all the major oilseeds and grains including coarse cereals and pulses, except sunflower.

The fall in production is estimated to be 18.86 per cent and 3.4 per cent in rice and wheat respectively, to 75.52 and 69.32 million tonne from 93.08 and 71.81 million tonne.
