FII investments top $27 bn

Net investments by foreign institutional investors in the Indian capital markets (equity and debt) crossed the $27 billion mark this week.

Till date FIIs have bought shares worth Rs 4,56,605 crore (Rs 4,566.05 billion) while they have sold shares worth Rs 3,43,784 crore (Rs 3,437.84 billion), resulting a net investment of Rs 1,12,820 crore (Rs 1,128.20 billion).

In calendar 2004, FIIs have already poured in $4.12 billion in the capital market of which $3.76 billion has been invested in equity and $359 million in debt.

While FIIs had invested $849.6 million in January, $587.3 million in February, they steeped up the net investment to $1,418 million in March.

The $4.1 billion FII investment in the current year so far, accounts for nearly 54 per cent of the total investment of $7.6 billion made in calendar 2003.

They have bought shares worth $1,263.70 million in nine trading days of April alone.

In these nine trading days, FIIs were net buyers in equity market to the tune of $1,302.10 million, while they were net sellers in the debt market amounting to $38.4 million.

FIIs made significant investments of $768 million on April 1 but this could be to pay for their subscription to the ONGC public offer, $166 million on April 2, $92.7 million on April 6 and $84.6 million on April 15.
