Contrary to domestic sales, passenger car exports have declined during May 2005 by 4 per cent to 13,460 units as compared to 14,048 units in May 2004.

Car exports during April-May this year, however, rose marginally to 23,964 units from 23,368 units in same months last year. Fall in exports has been largely due to a steep 64 per cent decline in exports by country's largest carmaker Maruti Udyog.

Exports of Ford Auto also dipped while that of Skoda Auto jumped nearly three-fold to 1,187 units and that of Maruti's key competitor Hyundai almost doubled during May.

Maruti exported 2,197 units compared to 6,041 units last year in May, while Ford exports were down to a mere 864 units in May 2005 from 2,575 units in May last year.

Hyundai's exports rose 85 per cent to 9,205 units from 4,973 units in May 2004. The trend is also similar for the two months this fiscal.

While Maruti's exports have halved to 3,364 units from 8,886 units a year ago, Hyundai's exports have nearly doubled to 15,758 units from 8,304 units in April-May 2004, as per figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

The total passenger vehicles exports have also dipped to 13,806 units in May this year from 14,283 units a year ago. Meanwhile, the total commercial vehicles exports have jumped 64 per cent to 2,645 units from 1,613 units a year ago.
