The government is contemplating amending the existing law to avoid litigation in recovery of EPF dues from defaulting public and private sector undertakings, Labour Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

"We may shortly come with an amended law in the House," Rao said. The Minister assured the House that the government would take all steps needed to expedite recovery of dues from defaulting establishments by amending the provisions of the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

He informed the members that 80 per cent of the dues were locked in litigation and said the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation has launched a special drive for recovering outstanding dues by formulating special squads of recovery in each of the regions and stepping up its coercive action under the law.

The Minister said recovery by EPFO had increased from Rs 626 crore (Rs 6.26 billion) in 1999-2000 to Rs 1832.70 crore (Rs 18.32 billion) and added that it was expected to touch the Rs1900 crore (Rs 19 billion) mark this year.
