Fiscal deficit falls by 2.3%

Fiscal deficit fell marginally by 2.3 per cent to Rs 90,239 crore (Rs 902. 39 billion) in the first nine months of the financial year 2004-05 mainly due to higher tax mop-up.

However, the revenue deficit up to December mounted to Rs 62,969 crore (Rs 629.69 billion), which is 82.7 per cent of the budgeted Rs 76,171 crore (Rs 761.71 billion) for 2004-05, according to figures released by Controller General of Accounts.

The central government's deficit till December, which works out to be 2.9 per cent of the GDP, was 65.7 per cent of the budgeted Rs 1,37,407 crore (Rs 1374.07 billion) for the entire 2004-05.

While total expenditure of the Centre stood at Rs 3,26,791 crore (Rs 3267.91 billion), the receipts were at Rs 2,36,552 crore (Rs 2365. 52 billion) during April-December.
