Christie's to auction Chandigarh furniture

Christie's will auction in New York, furniture and objects created by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret for private and government buildings in Chandigarh around 1960 when the capital city took shape.

Corbusier and Jeanneret were main architects who helped design the city and its landmarks including major buildings.

Among the objects on the block on June 5 will be a concrete exterior light fixture designed by Corbusier for open for public area.  The 89cm high, 88cm wide and 50cm deep fixture is expected to sell for between $25,000 and 30,000.

An Indian rosewood, wrought iron and iron low table, now in the private collection of a former employee of Corbusier and Jeanneret in Chandigarh, is expected to fetch between $100,000 and 120,000.

It is 45 cm high and 90 cm in diameter. It was designed by both Corbusier and Jeanneret and was made in 1960.

A caned Indian rosewood chauffeuse, designed in 1960 by Jeanneret for General Hospital reception lounge, is expected to go for between $40,000 and 50,000. It is 70 cm high, 78 cm wide and 53.5 cm deep.
