Come Dussehra and the country's mobile phones will overtake the fixed line with a subscriber base of more than 45 million, according to a study by an industry publication.
The fixed line subscriber base by October-end is expected to stand at 44 million, the Voice and Data said in a release on Tuesday. Even as the mobile industry faced a tough initial period, the future is going to be exciting with about 110 million new mobile subscribers in the next three years, V&D editor Ibrahim Ahmed said.
The subscriber base of GSM mobile is expected to rise to 35.09 million by October end from 33.59 million in September and CDMA subscribers will be 9.94 million by end of this month as compared to 0.11 million by the end of last month.
While the mobile base is expected to rise during the period, fixed lines subscribers will remain static at 40.91 million while FWT will rise to 3.84 million from the September's 3.54 million, it said.
The growing competition in the telecom arena and the entry of Reliance are the major contributors in this swelling of tele-density for mobiles, it added.
