Mobile subscribers in India have been migrating to cellular phones with higher capacities and more features, according to Axalto, the microprocessor cards provider.

Axalto Asia President Tan Teck Lee said in New Delhi that customers more used to the low-end 16 bit SIM cards are now migrating to 32 bit SIM cards, which have more storage capacity and can handle powerful features.

He said Axalto was in India since 1995 and has a development centre in Bangalore employing 25 professionals, which besides catering to the domestic market, customize applications for its customers in the Asian region.

Tan said the firm was in final stages of discussion with a cellular service provider in India to provide high end smart cards, which have higher storage space, besides enabling the mobile operator to offer more services.

"The downloading of music tones, MMS and some applications in the corporate area are the major movers," he said, adding that India was among the four fast growing markets in the region, besides China, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Tan, quoting global market research firm Gartner said, Axalto held a 26.5 per cent global market share in smart cards.

He said the firm may invest in manufacturing facilities in India, but had not finalised any plans.
