Car sales up 13% in May

Passenger car sales during May 2005 jumped 13.02 per cent to 68,516 units compared to 60,618 units during the same month last fiscal.

Two-wheeler sales rose 22.23 per cent during the month to 558,518 units as against 456,923 units in May 2004, as per the figures released by society of Indian automobile manufacturers on Friday.

Sales of commercial vehicles during May 2005 grew marginally to 23,546 units from 23,442 units in May last year. Three-wheeler sales increased 11.9 per cent to 23,976 units compared to 21,410 units last year, SIAM said.

The cumulative sales of all categories of vehicles rose 19.8 per cent to 694,673 units in May this year compared to 579,668 units during May 2004.

The cumulative sales of passenger cars during the first two months of the current fiscal grew 13.32 per cent to 132,446 units compared to 116,873 units in April-May 2004.

During May 2005, sales of utility vehicles rose 20.1 per cent to 14,682 units as against 12,224 units in May last year. Sales of multi-purpose vehicles increased from 5051 units to 5435 units in the review month, as per SIAM figures.

The total passenger vehicles sales - including cars, utility vehciles and MUVs - grew 13.85 per cent to 88,633 units from 77,893 units in May last year.

The cumulative sales of passenger vehicles during April-May 2005 rose 13.11 per cent to 171,194 units as against 151,342 units in the corresponding period last fiscal.

Though commercial vehicles sales have marginally risen during May 2005, total sales during two months declined 6.5 per cent to 40,425 units from 43,225 units in April-May 2004.The cumulative sales of three-wheelers in April-May 2005 grew to 45,803 units against 40,277 units a year ago.

The cumulative sales of all categories of vehicles during the first two months of the current fiscal rose 19.68 per cent to 1,356,261 units from 1,133,220 units a year ago.
