"Monthly turnover in equity derivative segment of BSE increased by 99.5 per cent from Rs 3,13,950 crore (Rs 3,139.5 billion) in April 2013 to Rs 6,26,216 crore (Rs 6,262.16 billion) in May 2013," Securities and Exchange Board of India said in its latest monthly bulletin.
After recording a high of Rs 9.23 lakh crore (Rs 9.23 trillion) in January, the derivative turnover at BSE sharply plunged to about Rs 2.3 lakh crore (Rs 2.3 trillion) in February. Since then, the figures have been slowly improving.
The volumes of equity derivative contracts traded on BSE's platform increased to 2 crore (Rs 20 million) in May from 1.10 crore (Rs 11 million) in the preceding month.
In comparison, National Stock Exchange, generally a preferred bourse for derivative trading, recorded a Rs 35 lakh crore (Rs 35 trillion) monthly turnover in equity derivative market in May -- a rise of 16.4
