The former eBay chief will face former governor and politician Jerry Brown, who is currently the state's attorney general. In one of the most expensive primary campaigns in California, Whitman spent more than $81 million.
Meanwhile, former chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard, Carly Fiorina, defeated former US representative Tom Campbell and Chuck Devore, to win the Republican primary in California to face Democratic US Senator Barbara Boxer in November.
The race for the US Senate is also an expensive affair. Fiorina spent nearly $7 million for the primary campaign in May.
