Taiwanese mobile handset company BenQ said on Thursday it is still keeping the option of setting up a manufacturing unit in India open, although it has suspended the project for the time being.

"We have conducted a research and sent a group of delegates to Chennai but we decided to suspend the project for a later date," BenQ President Adrian Chang told reporters in New Delhi.

"We plan to set up manufacturing units in India and are looking at Chennai and Haryana," BenQ Business Development and Strategy Head Boris Chang said.

The company has set a target to capture 3 per cent market share in India and has introduced the BenQ-Seimens brand of handsets.

"Our aim is to sell 1.4 million mobile phones by the end of this year," BenQ India Sales and Marketing Head G Prasanna Kumar said.

The company looks to attract a new separate segment of customers through its products, Adrian said.

The company unveiled a new range of BenQ-Seimens brand of handsets on Thursday, under its collaboration with German mobile major Siemens, which are priced between Rs 6,000 and Rs 16,000.

The brand will concentrate on tier-II and tier III cities for entry level phones and will market their mid and high level phones in metro cities like New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
