Global chipmaker AMD Corporation is setting up an India engineering centre in Bangalore with an aim to design future generations of AMD microprocessors, officials said on Thursday.
AMD will invest about $5 million over the next three years in the centre, which will hire about 40 professionals this year and ramp up to 120 chip designers by 2005, Ajay Marathe, AMD India president and corporate vice president, IT, global supply management, told reporters in Bangalore.
"Engineers at the design centre will work closely with AMD's engineering teams in the United States and will help define future microprocessor designs focused on meeting the evolving user needs in India and other high-growth markets," Randy Allen, vice president of engineering for AMD's computation products, said.
"We are expanding engineering operations at all our design locations," he said.
Marathe said AMD plans to leverage the talent here, to enhance its 64-bit microprocessor offerings and bring advanced technologies to a large number of customers across the world.
The US-based AMD designs and produces microprocessors, flash memory devices and low-power processor solutions for the computer, communications and consumer electronics industries.
