Politicians, technocrats to address TiE event

E-Mail this report to a friend

J M Shenoy

Given I K Gujral's Left-leaning politics, he may not be the right person to address a business group, but the Southern California chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs believe that the former Indian prime minister could offer some interesting perspectives about investment climate in India.

Gujral will address TiE on March 15 at the Cerritos Sheraton.

But the star of the evening is Professor Amar Bhidé, the Harvard Business School professor, who addressed TiE's Chicago chapter recently.

The Nature of Promising Start-ups is the subject of Professor Bhidé's talk. He currently teaches entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago as a visiting associate professor. He is the author of The Origin and Evolution of New Businesses, which Inc magazine called the 'One book to read to create a successful start-up.'

It is based on a 10-year study that he conducted at Harvard that figures out what differentiates a successful start-up from the ones that don't succeed.

A week later, on March 22, the New York chapter of TiE is holding a Business Plan Critique at the Yale Club in NYC.

The panelists will include Rohit Singh (McKinsey), Sanjiv Nathwani (Diamond Technology Partners), Seema Chetal (CitiCorp Investments), and James DeCarlo (Stroock & Stroock & Lavan).

The panel will evaluate attendee business plans that are selected by a pre-assigned selection committee. To be considered the plans must be submitted to info@tie-ny.org by 5 pm on March 10.

The selected entrepreneurs will be contacted one week prior to the event. TIE-NY will not sign non-disclosure agreements.

Rohit Singh is a management consultant working in the specialist group of Corporate Finance and Strategy practice at McKinsey & Company, Inc. He is involved in the valuation of firms for merger and acquisition projects, financial restructuring and value-based management. Recently, he has authored a document on the strategic rationale and structure of E-commerce carve-outs, tracking stocks and spin-offs.

Prior to joining McKinsey, he was instrumental in running a marketing campaign geared specifically for selling 401(k) plans to major US corporations at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and has also worked as a civil engineer in India. He holds a B Tech (Honours) from HBTI, Kanpur, an MBA from Cardiff Business School, UK and a MS (Finance) from Boston College.

Seema Chetal is a vice-president, Citigroup Investments Inc. She is experienced in analyzing business opportunities, reviewing and refining management business plans and strategy, and structuring deals. She previously worked with GE Capital's Acquisition Finance group. She has an MBA from Columbia Business School in 1993, an M.Com from the Delhi School of Economics, and is a member, Institute of Cost and Works Accountants.

Sanjiv Nathwani is a senior principal with Diamond Technology Partners. He has more than nine years of experience in software development, consulting and management experience in several industries including investment banking and engineering.

Prior to joining Diamond, Sanjiv was the founder, CEO and president of Trilon Inc, a software development and system integration firm focused on the engineering market. Previously, he was a systems consultant to Equitable Capital Management Corporation and head of development for syndicate products at Dalcomp Inc, a provider of networked computing services for investment banks. He is on the board of directors/advisors of several Internet start-ups.

James J DeCarlo, a registered patent attorney and partner with Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, is actively involved in all aspects of intellectual property counseling, especially those issues facing new technology-based businesses. His practice also encompasses technology licensing, drafting opinions, and directing the prosecution of patent applications in areas such as electronic commerce, telecommunications, computer software and hardware, electronic and electro-mechanical devices, medical devices, and semiconductors. He is also actively involved in litigating patent, trademark and copyright matters.
