In their ninth attempt, Denmark finally win the Thomas Cup

It took them nine attempts but Denmark have finally won the Thomas Cup.

Denmark beat Indonesia 3-2 in the final Sunday, making the Scandinavian country the first European team to win the competition.

Denmark expectedly won the three singles ties to seal their maiden triumph in the world's top team competition.

Hans-Kristian Vittinghus led the Danes to victory in the fifth and final match after fourth-ranked Viktor Axelsen and world number five Jan Jorgensen had won their respective matches.

Poul-Erik Hoyer Larsen, an Olympic gold medallist (Atlanta, 1996) and a two-time All-England champion, and now the president of the BWF presented the trophy.

Earlier on Saturday China retained the Uber Cup, the women's equivalent of the competition.
