ISRO prepares for Insat-3 series

The Indian Space Research Organisation plans to build five satellites, Insat-3A through 3E, under the Insat-3 series starting next year. These will be launched in five years.

While the Insat-3A to 3A are expected to be weigh around 2.5 tonnes each, the Insat-3E will tilt the balance at 3.5 tonnes.

The Insat-3A, 3B and 3C satellite cum payloads would augment the Insat transponder capacity to cater to the increased demand of about 130 transponders by 2002. Insat-3D is expected to carry an advanced six channel imager, a 19-channel sounder besides 10 Ku band channels. The Insat-3A to 3D satellites were expected to be made operational between 1999 and 2001.

The Insat-3E will be a heavier satellite with a different upgraded bus, capable of carrying 20 Ku band channels.
