DRDO scientists file patents for armament devices

Scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation have filed patents for a new explosive detection kit and a distress signal device developed by them.

DRDO's explosive detection kit is a generation ahead of similar devices and can quickly identify any explosive material. DRDO sources said the kits currently in use are multi-reagents and have three main disadvantages. First, the reagent is required to be prepared freshly by accurately weighing the quantities of explosive samples. Second, the reactions involved are multi-step and hence time-consuming. Third, different reagents have to react with the same sample, one after another, which makes the detection process tedious and inconvenient.

The sources said the DRDO kit quickly identifies explosive materials as it comprises not more than three reactants which react individually, separately and simultaneously with two or three batches of 2-10 mg of samples.

Within five minutes, the colour of the derivatives formed enables identification of the suspected explosive.

The distress signal device sends SOS messages from under water. It can be operated up to a 50-metre depth which is normally the working range of divers. The operating depth of the device can be enhanced by strengthening its outer cover.

The red flare and orange smoke emitted by the device is visible from a distance of about 1.5 km and lasts for a period of 20 seconds.

In an emergency the diver has to pull out the toggle of the strapping and release unit of the device. A sensor probe ensures that the pyrotechnic composition ignites only in water. It also ensures that the device remains in an upright position while floating on the surface.
