Amir Kabir shrine gutted, one militant killed in valley

The shrine of Hazrat Syed Amir Kabir was burnt down at Tral in Pulwama district early this morning while elsewhere in the valley one militant was killed last evening.

People from different areas took to the streets immediately after the news about the shrine spread. The police fired a few rounds in the air and lobbed teargas shells to disperse a stone-throwing mob, which was protesting against the mysterious fire in the shrine, which was being guarded by security forces for the past few years. Authorities believe the fire may have been caused by a short circuit.

About six policemen were reportedly injured in the stone throwing, sources said, adding that the situation was tense but now under control.

A defence ministry spokesperson said troops killed a militant during a search operation at Baramulla last evening. One pistol, one magazine and 67 rounds were recovered during the operation.
