Poll panel heads for major crisis

The Election Commission is heading for a major crisis with Election Commissioner G V G Krishnamurty levelling serious allegations against Chief Election Commissioner Dr M S Gill.

Calling on President K R Narayanan today, Krishnamurty briefed him of the developments.

Krishnamurty wrote a two-page letter to the President yesterday, accusing Dr Gill of a pro-Shiv Sena bias. ''Whatever be Dr Gill's compulsions, I am not ready to be a party to the favouritism,'' Krishnamurty told the media.

Protesting against Dr Gill's criticism -- of his media statement regarding the ultimatum issued to the Sena -- Krishnamurty said he would be forced to extend his nine-day casual leave if the issue is not amicably resolved.

Krishnamurty has been staying away from work since yesterday, and skipped a crucial Commission meeting called by Dr Gill today. Sources said Krishnamurty was invited by Dr Gill for the meeting.

Krishnamurty failed to understand why Dr Gill was against making public an unanimous decision taken by the full Commission. He said Dr Gill's remarks may erode the Commission's credibility.

Krishnamurty also wrote to the President on the need for a free and fair election and inner party democracy in all the political parties recognised by the Commission.
