Hurriyat leaders seek UN's intervention

The All Party Hurriyat Conference yesterday urged United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to intervene in Kashmir and send a deputation of human rights observers to the valley to investigate the human rights situation.

In a memorandum presented at the New Delhi office of the UN resident coordinator, APHC chairman Mirwaiz Omar Farooq said, ''A deputation of human rights observers should be sent to Kashmir to investigate human rights violations.''

The memorandum said the Kashmir issue was the oldest unresolved issue on the UN agenda due to which people of the state were suffering.

However, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah has said the Kashmir issue should be taken off the UN agenda as it had not been discussed for a long time.

He also demanded withdrawal of the United Nations Military Observer Group from the valley, saying the UN now did not have any role to play as India and Pakistan were bound by the Shimla agreement.

The delegation, which comprised senior APHC leaders, also staged a protest in front of the UN office.
