'Akash' field trials next year

Surface-to-air missile 'Akash' is being readied for a series of field trials during 1998, A P J Abdul Kalam, scientific advisor to the defence minister, said today.

Addressing a seminar at the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment in Bangalore, he said the 25-km range missiles could intercept three different targets and were capable of integration of acquired targets such as remotely piloted vehicles.

He said the tests would be carried out from two different ranges in the eastern sector.

Kalam, who was recently honoured with the Bharat Ratna, said the requirement of flight testing would become more demanding henceforth, with the country's airspace being used by light combat aircraft, various types of missiles and electronic warfare systems.
