Najma lashes out at Doordarshan

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Najma Heptulla on Friday took strong objection against the alleged damage caused to Parliament building by Doordarshan.

The TV outfit reportedly damaged wood carvings on the roof of the House and drilled holes in the walls to accommodate cameras.

Expressing anguish over the changes made in the 75-year-old building, the deputy chairman said, ''Parliament is our body... It is like making holes in our body.''

The chair also ordered an inquiry into the incident, following objections raised by several members.

Raising the matter, Syed Sibtey Razi (Congress) said the building was linked with the country's history. ''It is a legacy of the past and we must protect it.''

Leader of the Opposition, Sikander Bakht (BJP) wanted to know who gave permission for breaking the wooden carvings.

Dr Heptulla said anything done in the House was first cleared by the general purposes committee. She said she herself was a member of the committee but the matter did not come before it.
