Threat to Kerala CM: IB, RAW informed

May 14, 2007 18:20 IST

Taking a serious note of the anonymous threat call from Saudi Arabia about killing Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan in 24 hours, the state police on Monday informed the Central Intelligence Bureau and Research & Analysis Wing, besides beginning its own investigations.

Director General of Police Raman Srivastava said they have sought the help of IB and RAW to track down the source of the call by noting down the number displayed on the caller ID of the phone on which the call was received.

The call in Malayalam, threatening that an attempt would be made on Achuthanandan's life within 24 hours, was received at the police commissioner's office in Kozhikode on Monday morning.

The personal security of the chief minister, who was in the state capital, as well as of the government Secretariat was stepped up immediately.

According to the policeman, who received the call, the caller's accent sounded like that of a person hailing from Thrissur area of the state, the DGP said.

The ADGP (Intelligence) and DIG (Northern Range) were co-ordinating in the investigations, he added.

Meanwhile, when reporters asked Achuthanandan if he thought that the threat to him had anything to do with the drive against illegal landgrab in Munnar in Idukki district of the state, he replied, "What else could be the reason?"
