Bhartiya Janata Party has shifted its national convention to be held from June 15 to 17 in Jaipur to Delhi in view of the Gujjar agitation in the state which has claimed more than twenty lives so far and threatens to intensify further in days to come with other communities likely to join it.

"We have shifted the national convention to Delhi from Jaipur to Delhi on June 15 and 16 in view of the on going war between Gujjars and others. I am requesting you to play down the violence so that it helps bring down the situation to normal," Ravi Shankar Prasad told newsmen at a press conference in New Delhi on Friday.

Even as he claimed the situation has been brought under control, news of fresh counter-violence by the Meena community came in from Dausa from where it started. Journalists who had reached Dausa last night said that seven persons have been killed by the caste war.

But he denied that there was any move to change the Chief Minister Mrs Vasundhara Raje with one of her juniors or she has been summoned to Delhi for holding consultations. "Her presence in Jaipur is more important. She has been in touch with senior leaders of the party on phone and handling the situation," Prasad said in response to a question from a newsman.

In a significant development all national highways in the state barring the Agra-Dausa highway have been opened to traffic. This helped in bringing relief to thousands of passengers who were caught in traffic jam for last four days.

Surprisingly the chief minister of Rajasthan has not issued any statement about any kind of relief and rehabilitation programme for the families of those who have been killed in police firing.

Army units were used to restore the confidence amongst the common people. Gujjars have been demanding schedule tribe status which is being opposed by the Meena community which comprises over 11 per cent in the state while Gujjars have limited influence pockets in Dausa and Bundi.

But they have large presence in Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
