After targeting tax defaulting colleges and cinema halls, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday widened its net and took action against over 60 farmhouses on the outskirts of the capital for not paying property tax dues amounting to lakhs of rupees.

The corporation put up auction boards in front of 65 such farmhouses in Kishangad, Mehrauli and Chattarpur areas of the capital as all of them owe more than Rs 10 lakh in property tax arrears to the MCD, a senior official said.

The boards display the tax dues of the farmhouses and carry a warning that the property would be seized and auctioned if the arrears are not paid within a week, the official said.

According to the civic body, around 200 farmhouses and over 100 schools in the capital figure in the list of tax defaulter and action will be taken against all of them in the coming days. Auction boards have already been put up in front of 85 schools across the city.

Meanwhile, some schools like Guru Nanak Public School, Pusa Public School and Vedavyas Public School have started payment of the tax arrears in installments, the official said.

With just a month left for the financial year to end, the corporation has accelerated its drive to recover property tax dues as it has so far collected only Rs 500 crore of its Rs 1,375 annual target.
