Communist Party of India general secretary A B Bardhan Tuesday admitted that the Left had no other option but to continue the support to the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre.

Speaking to newspersons in Kochi, he said they had not given any ultimatum and had no plans to pull the rug, since they did not want the communal forces to seize the power.

Bardhan, however, cautioned the Congress that numbers would not ultimately matter and if things continued like this, the government would collapse on its own under the people's might.

"There is no end in sight as people ask if it is the beginning of the end (withdrawing the support). But things cannot go on like this," he said, admitting that the Left was neglected by the Congress from the beginning and the chasm has now widened further.

While claiming that the Left was in talks with all parties except the Bharatiya Janata Party, he however played down the chances of a Third Front as "only a perspective being talked for over eight years and it is not just there right now".

On their demand for debate in Parliament over Iran and economic policies, he said the Left would not want a vote to destabilise the UPA government, but wanted to expose the issue before the people.

"There has been consensus on our independent foreign policy from the days of Jawaharlal Nehru, but the Congress has toyed the American line and their ambassador to India was acting like a viceroy," Bardan said.

Even as there was poor response from the Congress on the 19 detailed notes on different issues, the Left had also submitted another in view of the budget, suggesting on the mode of mobilising the resources and curbing the expenditure.
