Caught on the horns of a dilemma on the Iran vote, the Bharatiya Janata Party has called a meeting of its Parliamentary party leaders on February 14. The agenda is to decide its stand on the Samajwadi Party's proposed no-confidence vote against the United Progressive Alliance government in Lok Sabha.
Charging the government with not taking the Opposition into confidence on India's vote against Tehran in the recent International Atomic Energy Agency meeting, BJP deputy leader in Lok Sabha, V K Malhotra, said that the executive of the BJP Parliamentary party would take a final decision on the proposed no-trust vote.
Besides former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, leader of Opposition L K Advani and party president Rajnath Singh, the meeting would be attended by senior leaders, including former party chiefs. It will also draw up the party's strategy in the Budget Session.
The Naveen Chawla issue, the amendment to the Foreigners' Act, the Supreme Court ruling on dissolution of Bihar Assembly, inflation and the Quattrocchi issue top the party's agenda for the session, Malhotra said.
While a major section of the saffron party is in favour of supporting the proposed trust vote, as it could lead to the fall of the government, a hardcore Hindutva section is of the opinion that another Islamic nuclear power (Iran) in the neighbourhood was not in India's national interests, as the weapons could fall into the hands of fundamentalists.
The BJP meeting would be followed by a meeting of National Democratic Alliance leaders ahead of the session, Malhotra said.
BJP leaders are also expected to call on the President next week to demand the removal of Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, who is under attack as two trusts run by his family had allegedly received funds from some Congress MPs.
