Nineteen persons were killed and 23 were injured when a private bus fell into a gorge near Ghaghas, 86 km from Shimla, in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh on Friday.

The bus, with nearly 45 passengers, was travelling from Sarkaghat to Nichar in Kinnaur district, Deputy Commissioner, Bilaspur, J C Sharma, told PTI.

A six-month-old girl escaped unhurt, but her parents appeared to have died, with no one coming forward to claim the child.

Twelve people died on the spot, six on way to hospital and one in hospital, Sharma said, adding the six seriously injured were rushed to Chandigarh.

The driver and conductor of the bus were among the injured.

The district administration has announced an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 5000 to each of the injured.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and Governor Suraj Bhan have expressed shock and grief over the accident.
