Judges view controversial Babri documentary

Film-maker Anand Patwardhan has moved the Bombay high court seeking a direction to Doordarshan to telecast his award-winning documentary, Father, Son and the Holy War, based on the rathyatra of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lal Kishenchand Advani in 1990 and the situation prevailing after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.

Justices Ajit Shah and S Vajifdar viewed the two-hour documentary on Thursday. The court will now hear the matter sometime next week.

P A Sebastian, counsel for the petitioner, said the documentary was made in 1994 and had bagged the national award the following year. Doordarshan usually telecasts national award-winning films and documentaries, but this one was not beamed on the satellite channels, he said.

The documentary, made in Hindi and English, won national awards for best film on social issues and best investigative film, the court was told.
