Militants kill 10 in Assam: PTI

Dima Halong Dauga militants killed 10 persons, including nine policemen, and wounded two others in an ambush in a remote place in Assam's hill district of North Cachar on Thursday.

Official sources said that 22 security men belonging to the Fifth Assam police battalion were with a police party, carrying monthly salaries from Guwahati, when they were fired upon by a group of ultras at Dihangi, near Haflong.

Eight policemen died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries later. Two policemen were injured.

As policemen retaliated, a civilian was caught in the crossfire.

No casualty was reported from the side of the extremists who, however, looted eight SLRs, a pistol and a carbine from the policemen before escaping into the dense forest nearby.

Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, accompanied by top police and army officials, will visit Haflong on Friday, for an on-the-spot assessment. He directed the district administration to take immediate action to nab the culprits.

The chief minister announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of the kin of the slain people.
