Large-scale administrative reshuffle in UP

At least 14 district magistrates, three divisional commissioners, two principal secretaries and several departmental heads were shifted in a large-scale administrative reshuffle of 40 IAS officers in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

Much as Chief Minister Rajnath Singh has been proclaiming that he would bring an end to what is commonly referred to as the "transfer and posting industry" in Uttar Pradesh, there seems to be no end to the malady.

Singh had reshuffled over 250 IAS and IPS officers in the 102 days that he had been in office.

Contrary to his assertion that he would not succumb to political pressures in matters relating to posting of administrative or police officers, the chief minister has been doing just that.

"However, unlike his predecessor Ram Prakash Gupta who would give in to the slightest coercion from even minor leaders of the Sangh Parivar, Rajnath Singh does not get cowed down by anyone. But if you can exercise the right pressure through some leader of one of the ruling allies, your demands will be met," remarked a senior BJP leader.

The leader had recently complained to the BJP bigwigs in New Delhi about Singh turning a blind eye to his pleas on transfers. As a result, the new list contains all the names suggested by him.
