Musharraf regime promises to hold elections in 2002

The Pakistani military regime Wednesday promised the Supreme Court that it would hold parliamentary elections before October 12, 2002, as ordered by the court.

Government lawyer Sharifuddin Pirzada said the military regime will honour last year's judgement, which made it binding for the military rulers to hold elections within three years of the October 1999 coup.

The May 2000 judgement had validated the bloodless coup.

The government's submissions were filed before the Supreme Court in response to a number of petitions seeking a review of its previous judgement.

A 11-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Irshad Hassan Khan, Tuesday asked counsel for the military regime to tell the court about the time frame for restoration of democracy in the country.
