TN is ready with its counter-affidavitThe Tamil Nadu government's counter affidavit in a case relating to forest brigand Veerappan's demands is being given final touches before being filed in the Supreme Court on Friday, official sources in Madras said. Confirming the receipt of the affidavit on Wednesday, the sources said the state government's counsel is studying it to ensure that everything is in order. The state government's counter affidavit is in response to a public interest plea filed by a Delhi-based lawyer challenging the state's decision to release five Tamil extremists to secure the freedom of Kannada film icon Dr Rajakumar, who is being held hostage along with three others since July 30 by Veerappan. The state government is understood to have reiterated its right to withdraw the cases under Section 321 of the CrPC, citing similar action in the past by the Centre and some state governments. The draft of the affidavit was finalised at Chennai on Tueday at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. UNI
