Sixth mission to secure Dr Rajakumar's release

Tamil National Movement leader P Nedumaran and two human rights activists - Prof G Kalyani and P Sukumar - left for the jungles in the wee hours of Sunday on a sixth mission to secure the release of Kannada film star Dr Rajakumar.

However, journalist-emissary R R Gopal is expected to leave only later. Associate Editor of Tamil biweekly Nakkheeran, A Kamaraj, said in Madras on Sunday that Gopal would be leaving for the forests to join the other emissaries as soon as he got a signal from sandalwood smuggler Veerappan.

Earlier, Gopal had undertaken four missions to the jungles on his own.

However, following a demand made by the outlaw and subsequent requests by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments, Nedumaran, Kalyani and Sukumar had also agreed to participate in the effort to negotiate the release of Dr Rajakumar.

Together, they managed to secure the release of one of the hostages, Dr Rajakumar son-in-law Govindaraju, on October 16.

The sixth mission, which was almost derailed by a remark of Tamil Maanila Congress leader S Balakrishnan got off after various persons persuaded Nedumaran to continue as part of the negotiating team.
