The United States President Bill Clinton arrived in Delhi on Sunday evening on a three-nation tour of South Asia to give a new dimension to Indo-US relations and in a bid to restore democracy in Pakistan.

Clinton, who was accompanied by his daughter, Chelsea, and a high-level delegation of senior officials, was received at the airport by External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh.

Clinton's Boeing 747 jumbo jet, Air Force One, touched down at the air force station, Palam at around 8.30 pm and chief of protocol Manbir Singh went inside the aircraft to escort the President down the ladder.

US Ambassador Richard Celeste and his wife, Jacquiline, and Foreign Secretary Lalit Mansingh were also present to receive Clinton and his delegation.

The Indian leg of President Clinton's visit begins only on Tuesday. He will spend the day tomorrow in Dhaka and return to Delhi in the evening. He will have a brief stopover in Pakistan on his way back on March 25.

Among those accompanying the US President are: Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, National Security Adviser Samuel Berger, Commerce Secretary William Daley and Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott.

Three documents would be signed between India and the United States during Clinton's visit, including a joint statement which would spell out a new ''vision'' for Indo-US relations.

In Delhi, Clinton would hold talks with President K R Narayanan, Vice President Krishan Kant and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Leader of the Opposition Sonia Gandhi, would call on him before his address to a joint session of Parliament on March 22.
