Pak backed IA hijack: US

The Bill Clinton administration feels that a terrorist group backed by the Pakistani military had planned the hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane last month.

According to The New York Times, Pakistan now faces the risk of being placed on Washington's list of nations that support terrorism.

Senior officials also say that Pakistan military ruler, General Pervez Musharraf had rejected the US demand to ban Harkat ul-Mujahedeen.

''The conclusion that a terrorist group supported by Pakistan carried out the hijacking comes as the White House must make a decision in coming weeks about whether President Clinton should visit Pakistan as part of his planned visit to India and Bangladesh at the end of March,'' the newspaper reports.

The visit to India might be announced this week, ''with the option of a stop in Pakistan still open, pending some gestures of cooperation by Pakistan'', officials said.
